The Ondo State House of Assembly says it is following proper procedures in investigating allegations against the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Twenty-two of the 26 legislators are already supporting Aiyedatiwa’s impeachment.
Assembly spokesperson Olatunji Oshati said serving the notice of allegations only initiated proceedings and did not equate to removal. He stated the process remains in the realm of claims under examination.
Oshati reiterated the lawmakers’ commitment to due process, adding the deputy governor has full rights to defend himself against the charges. The allegations include financial misdeeds and gross misconduct.
While impeachment speculations swirl, the Assembly maintains it is simply executing its constitutional duty to probe accusations about Aiyedatiwa objectively.
Analysts however contend that issuing a notice of allegations is typically the first step in removing an executive office holder. The deputy governor’s fate hangs in the balance as he prepares his response.
With Governor Akeredolu’s own position threatened by defections, the impeachment crisis has plunged Ondo into uncertainty. But the lawmakers insist they will follow proper impeachment protocols as the investigation continues.
The Assembly seeks to underscore its integrity amidst pressure from all sides.
However critics argue impartiality is doubtful if a majority has already decided on impeachment beforehand.
