The Sokoto State Government has officially upgraded and renamed the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies as part of a major reform in the state’s tertiary education sector.

Governor signed into law the bill passed by the State House of Assembly on May 14, 2026, upgrading the institution into a full-fledged College of Technology and Advanced Studies.

The development was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishamu, during a briefing in his office.

Under the new law, the former has been renamed the Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko College of Techjogy and Advanced Studies, in honour of former governor Wamakko, who is being recognised for his contributions to the development of the education sector in Sokoto State and across Nigeria.

Maishanu explained that the upgrade is aimed at expanding access to higher technical and vocational education, adding that the institution will now run Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in line with the administration’s education reform agenda.

He commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for approving the transition at what he described as a “critical time,” noting that the move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening human capital development and improving educational infrastructure.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the state government will soon constitute a Governing Council for the institution to enhance its administrative efficiency and academic standards.

The Ministry for Higher Education said the reform is part of broader efforts to reposition tertiary institutions in Sokoto State for improved productivity, relevance, and competitiveness.
