The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Kebbi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, has announced the delivery of two million doses of polio vaccine to Kebbi in preparation for the 2025 round of the polio vaccination campaign.
This announcement was made during a social mobilization engagement with media practitioners held in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.
Speaking at the event, the Kebbi State Health Promotion Officer, Yusuf Sawwa, said the media engagement aimed to raise awareness and ensure adequate publicity ahead of the vaccination campaign.
“We have received at least two million doses of polio vaccine from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in preparation for the 2025 round of polio vaccination in Kebbi State,” he stated.
Sawwa explained that the agency, in collaboration with technical partners including UNICEF, has conducted a series of training sessions across state and local government levels. These trainings have prepared health personnel who will, in turn, train vaccinators and community mobilizers.
To address issues of non-compliance and vaccine rejection, particularly in areas such as Jega, Koko, and Birnin Kebbi, religious and traditional leaders have been actively engaged to help dispel misinformation and promote vaccine acceptance.
Although the state has not recorded any cases of polio in the past five months, Sawwa attributed this success to ongoing interventions and intermittent vaccination efforts.
He further noted that the Kebbi State Government has provided cold storage facilities, including in remote areas, to ensure the proper preservation of the vaccines.
Appealing to parents and caregivers, he assured that no child would be missed during the 2025 campaign, as comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure full coverage
