The Zamfara Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Muhammad Lawan, has appealed to Gov. Dauda Lawal to establish a permanent orientation camp in the state.
Lawan made the call during a meeting with Zamfara Councils’ leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Gusau on Wednesday.
He praised the governor for his support to the scheme, noting that this support has improved NYSC programmes and corps members’ welfare in Zamfara.
Lawan explained that a permanent orientation camp would provide adequate space, better security, and improved facilities for corps members during their service year.
He added that such a facility would strengthen the implementation of the mandatory three-week orientation course and enhance the scheme’s overall effectiveness in the state.
“The permanent camp will also serve as a center for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development activities for corps members and other youths,” he said.
Lawan commended the Zamfara Government under Gov. Lawal for improving security and welfare support for NYSC activities.
He also applauded the governor for establishing a state NYSC Governing Board in line with the NYSC Act.
“In Zamfara, NYSC has made significant contributions through corps members in host communities.
“Most schools and hospitals in the state would not operate effectively without corps members.
“Projects such as toilet facilities, boreholes, mini-libraries, and skill acquisition initiatives initiated by corps members benefit their communities,” he stated.
According to him, NYSC continues to impact education, healthcare, community development, and rural initiatives across the state.
“I congratulate the NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, on the scheme’s 53rd anniversary, marking over five decades of service to Nigeria.
“Established on May 22, 1973, by Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s administration, NYSC was created after the civil war to foster national unity, integration, and mutual understanding among Nigerian youths from diverse backgrounds,” he explained.
He emphasized that the scheme has consistently achieved its goals through corps members’ deployment across Nigeria, where they provide selfless service and contribute meaningfully to communities.
Lawan reaffirmed NYSC’s commitment to promoting national unity, cultural integration, and community development through impactful programmes that have transformed lives nationwide.
“Beyond promoting cultural integration, NYSC has undertaken numerous community development projects aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life,” he added.
The coordinator also commended the media for its support and partnership with NYSC.

“As partners in progress, I urge you to support us by publicising our programmes and highlighting the positive contributions of corps members across Zamfara,” he concluded.
