PLAN International Nigeria, in collaboration with the Adamawa Climate Action Network (ACAN), has planted 620 seedlings in flood-prone communities in Yola North and Numan Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Nubwa Bawuro, Plan International’s Social and Behaviour Change Communications Officer, said this on Friday during a sensitisation programme and seedling distribution in Boronji community, Yola North LGA.
Bawuro explained that the project, funded by the Zurich Climate Resilient Alliance, aims to build community members’ capacity to withstand the impacts of climate change.
She said that, in addition to the 620 seedlings, the project would provide 600 tree protectors across the two LGAs.
Bawuro urged community members to recognise the importance of tree planting and strengthen their efforts to protect the environment.
“One of the things we are doing is to ensure that whatever we do is sustainable,” she said.
Aaron Isaac, ACAN secretary, described the partnership as a strong collaboration in the fight against climate change in Adamawa communities.
He thanked Plan International and the Zurich Climate Resilient Alliance for supporting efforts to build community members’ capacity.
Isaac urged residents to nurture the trees to maturity for the benefit of people and the environment.
Inuwa Liman, the community leader, expressed appreciation for the sensitisation programme and the seedlings.
He said the programme had helped residents understand the importance of planting trees, particularly fruit-bearing and other economically valuable trees.
Liman pledged to protect the trees from animals and nurture them to maturity.
He also appealed to the state government to provide the community with potable water, noting its proximity to Government House in Yola.
