Kwara House of Assembly has urged the State Government, through its Ministry of Health, to ensure stiffer regulation of the practice of traditional medicine in the state.
The call was consequent to the motion: “Need to Enforce Regulation of the Activities of Traditional Medicine Practitioners in line with the Kwara State Traditional Medicine and Registration Law 2006”.
The motion was sponsored by the House Leader, Abdulkadir Magaji (APC/Ilorin Central) at Tuesday’s plenary.
Magaji said the regulation would encourage practitioners to exercise their trade according to the provisions of the Kwara State Traditional Medicine and Registration Law 2006.
According to him, the existing law that regulates and standardises traditional medicine practitioners’ activities is being abused, thereby, posing health risks to the citizens.
Co-sponsors of the motion advised Nigerians, particularly residents of Kwara, to always buy traditional medicines approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Reading the house resolutions, the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, urged the state Commissioner for Health to ensure regular training and sensitisation of practitioners to operate within the ambits of the law.
The speaker also called for the prosecution of any practitioner found contravening the provisions of the law.
