The Wife of the Katsina State Governor, Zulaihat Radda has called for improved funding to fight cancer in Nigeria.
According to her, better funding will ensure access to quality healthcare by patients and a commitment to early detection of the disease.
The governor’s wife made the call on Sunday in Katsina during the commemoration of the 2024 world cancer day, with the theme ‘Close the Care Gap’.
She added that education and awareness play pivotal roles in this battle, empowering individuals to make informed choices for their health and promoting a culture of prevention.
“Today, let us remember those who have bravely faced cancer, acknowledge the resilience of survivors, and support those currently fighting this formidable foe.
“By fostering a sense of community and compassion, we can provide strength to those in need and inspire change on a global scale,” said.
According to her, this occasion serves as a global reminder of the urgent need to unite in the fight against cancer, a formidable adversary that affects millions of lives around the world.
She added that cancer knows no boundaries, it respects no age, gender, or social status, and It is an indiscriminate force that tests the strength of individuals and communities alike.
“On this day, we stand united to emphasise the power of collective action, awareness, and support in combating this relentless disease.
“Taking into consideration the theme, added to the candid commitment that all the Nigerian governors’ spouses are championing the fight against cancer across the 36 states and Abuja.
“It is incumbent upon us to continue advocating for increased funding, access to quality healthcare, and a commitment to early detection.
As we reflect on the impact of cancer, let us also celebrate the progress we have made in research, treatment, and patient care,” she said.
Medical advancements and breakthroughs, according to Radda have given countless individuals a chance at a better life, demonstrating the remarkable strides they have taken in understanding and tackling this complex illness.
The governor’s wife further noted that the current research has revealed that cancer can be treated especially when detected at an early state.
“For this reason, I have sponsored mammography to women at the federal teaching hospital and also sponsored pherpsmea at Turai Yar’adua hospital.
“I have equally secured insurance to those diagnosed with the disease and supported those undergoing surgery. Yet, our work is far from done,” she said.
She re-iterate her commitment and partnership with individuals and corporate bodies in the area of health, education empowerment, assisting the less privilege and climate change for the development of our state and Nigeria at large.
“Together we can make a difference. Let us renew our commitment to a world without cancer, where future generations can live free from the shadow of this disease.
The stakeholders that spoke at the event, advocated for more collaborative efforts towards fighting cancer.
