The Kaduna State Government has commissioned and formally taken over a medical oxygen piping system at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital (YDMH), Tudun Wada, Kaduna, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Commissioner for Health, Umma K. Ahmed, said the project represents a major step in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly for mothers, newborns, and critically ill patients. She described the intervention as life-saving, noting that access to reliable and uninterrupted medical oxygen remains critical to improving survival outcomes.
The Commissioner expressed the appreciation of the Kaduna State Government to UNICEF for its sustained support, explaining that the oxygen piping system complements earlier UNICEF-supported interventions at the hospital, including the construction and equipping of a Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the establishment of a medical oxygen plant.
According to her, extending oxygen directly to points of care through the piping system will improve efficiency, safety, and rapid response in emergency and routine clinical services, especially within the neonatal unit.
She stated that the intervention aligns with the vision of the Kaduna State Government under the leadership of Senator Uba Sani to strengthen health infrastructure, improve maternal and neonatal outcomes, and reduce preventable deaths.
The Commissioner assured UNICEF and other partners of the state government’s commitment to proper management, maintenance, and optimal utilization of the facility to ensure long-term impact.
In their goodwill messages, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Mr. Yusuf Ato Moses, and Dr. Hadiza Aliyu Iyal of UNICEF reaffirmed their organisations’ continued support to Kaduna State, particularly in ensuring sustained availability of medical oxygen.
