The Enugu State Government is working on new yearly action plans that will be added to the state’s health budget for 2026.

This effort is part of a big project called the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. The goal is to improve hospitals and health services across Nigeria, including better insurance coverage.

During a 4-day training in Enugu, the State Health Commissioner, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, said this program brings together all the different people and groups working in health under one plan to track how the sector is doing.

The training was titled “Towards Rational, Realistic, Pragmatic and Comprehensive Plan that Informs Health Budget for the People of Enugu State”.

Prof. Obi explained that the program, using a method called the State-Wide Approach (SWAp), aims to unite everyone in the health sector to follow one system for tracking progress.

He said this method will help create one plan for the entire health system in Nigeria, with shared goals, proper tracking, and better coordination.

According to him, the workshop is the first step in training leaders who will help create a single yearly health plan for Enugu State, which will be included in the 2026 health budget.

People attending the training include senior managers, government officials, and other key health workers in Enugu State. Obi said he expects them to take the training seriously and work hard to create a good plan.

Mrs. Francisca Ewoh, who manages the SWAp program in Enugu, said the aim is to make sure everyone in the health system works together and follows the same plan. She added that, unlike before, outside partners won’t just do their own thing — the state will now set priorities based on real evidence.

Mrs. Ann Oguejioffor, who leads health planning in the state’s health ministry, said the training will help simplify the planning for the 2026 health budget.

She also said that thanks to the SWAp program, everyone — including partners — will follow one plan, so their efforts won’t overlap or repeat what the state is already doing.

The goal of the yearly health plans is to improve healthcare in Enugu by getting everyone to work together. This will help avoid wasting resources and make sure the health system runs more smoothly.
