The Anambra State Government announced that free blood pressure checks are now available at primary healthcare centres across the state to improve access to healthcare services, especially for residents in rural communities.
Dr. Afam Obidike, the state’s Commissioner for Health, disclosed this on Wednesday during a news conference to mark 2026 World Hypertension Day in Awka.
World Hypertension Day, observed annually on May 17, aims to raise awareness about hypertension and promote its prevention, detection, and control.
He stated that approximately 90 percent of blood pressure monitoring and related healthcare services are currently provided at the primary healthcare level. This initiative is designed to bring healthcare closer to the people and strengthen efforts against hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of increased public awareness regarding regular blood pressure checks. “Many people live with hypertension unknowingly because it has a silent nature. Hypertension is a ‘silent killer,’ and I urge residents to take their health seriously by monitoring their blood pressure regularly and knowing their health status,” he said.
Obidike recalled that the state government launched the “Solution Know Your Number” initiative in 2023 to encourage residents to monitor and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. The initiative was introduced to combat the rising burden of hypertension through awareness and early detection.
He warned that hypertension can affect anyone regardless of age or social status, and it can only be managed—not cured. Healthy living, regular exercise, and proper diet remain vital in reducing the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions.
He advised residents to visit nearby health facilities for routine blood pressure checks and seek medical attention promptly when necessary. Obidike also praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the “Solution Know Your Number” programme, describing it as a significant step toward improving public health in the state.
He concluded by stating that the Ministry of Health would soon introduce more programmes aimed at addressing cardiovascular diseases and promoting healthy lifestyles among residents.
