The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Health to establish an independent monitoring unit within the Ministry of Health.
The resolution of the 8th Assembly called for closer monitoring of health personnel in public facilities to curb alleged medical negligence blamed for avoidable deaths.
Motion targets negligence and delayed care
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Mr Chidiebere Ibemeka, representing Njikoka I Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Ibemeka cited recurring public complaints about alleged negligence, delayed emergency responses, and unprofessional conduct by some healthcare workers, reportedly leading to preventable fatalities.
CCTV in key areas, independent complaint desk proposed
He proposed installing CCTV cameras in key hospital units — monitored directly from the Ministry of Health — alongside creating independent complaint desk officers not employed by the hospitals.
According to him, surveillance should cover emergency rooms, Intensive Care Units, and labor wards, described as high-pressure zones where greater accountability could significantly improve patient outcomes.
Ibemeka argued that digital monitoring and independent oversight align with global best practices and would enhance quality assurance across public health institutions.
He added that CCTV footage would provide unbiased records, protecting patients from negligence while shielding medical personnel from false accusations.
Lawmakers back stronger accountability
Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Ikenna Ofodeme said the initiative would strengthen service delivery and accountability in both urban and rural hospitals.
Deputy Minority Leader Kingsley Udemezue and other lawmakers described the proposal as timely, noting that improved surveillance would reduce complacency and restore public confidence.
Speaker directs implementation
Speaker Dr Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over plenary, commended the sponsor and called on the Commissioner for Health to implement the Assembly’s resolution.
