Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of U.S.-based Nigerian physician Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, who was in the state for a medical mission.
In a condolence message issued on Friday in Umuahia, Otti described her as a dedicated and compassionate medical practitioner.
The State Government, in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), organized a five-day free medical outreach from April 13 to April 17.
The governor noted that the late Dr. Nwaubani, a member of ANPA, had returned to Nigeria with her husband and daughter, a final-year medical student in the United States, to provide free medical services to Abia residents.
During the outreach, she experienced a medical emergency and was immediately taken to a hospital. A team of ANPA and local medical experts worked to provide urgent critical care, but despite their efforts, she could not be saved.
Governor Otti extended condolences to her family, loved ones, and members of ANPA. He confirmed that the state government was in communication with her family and the association’s leadership, promising support during the period of mourning.
He also commended the family and ANPA for allowing the medical mission to continue despite the tragedy, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the health and well-being of the state’s residents and visitors.
The governor prayed for the repose of Dr. Nwaubani’s soul and for strength for her family to bear the loss.
