UTA hosts widows, distributes food items to mark end of year

The United Towns Agency for North South Cooperation (UTA) hosted widows and the less privileged on Monday by distributing food items to them in Abuja.

The event was part of its activities to mark the end of its calendar year.

The event, which took place on Monday, December 29, 2025, at the palace of the Sa’peyi of Garki, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr) Usman Nga-kupi, recorded a mammoth crowd who graced and benefitted from the programme.

While welcoming the UTA team to his palace, the Sa’peyi—who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of UTA—commended the novel idea of the organisation for remembering the widows and the less privileged at this crucial moment in the country’s economy.

He noted that the gesture would go a long way in strengthening the faith of the less privileged amongst us by reassuring them that they are also remembered and celebrated as part of society.

He prayed that God would replenish the purse of the organisation while wishing them well in all their endeavours in 2026.

Alhaji Usman further urged other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to emulate the kind gesture of UTA by supporting the needy and the less privileged, while emphasising that the government should be supported not only by NGOs but by other well-endowed citizens across all strata in alleviating poverty.

In her remark, the Country President of UTA, Princess Abigail Amalaha, explained that the event is part of the humanitarian mandate of the organisation to support the less privileged and the needy. According to her, “despite the harsh economic situation in the country, we should all in our little ways learn to be our brother’s keeper” and urged the government at all levels to step up their efforts towards enduring food security in the coming year.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with our reporter expressed their gratitude and appreciation to UTA for remembering them and prayed that God would be with them in all their activities in the new year and always.

UTA is a United Nations-affiliated non-governmental organisation founded in 1982 which enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). With its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the organisation is directly involved in diverse activities which include promoting human rights, supporting Sustainable Development Goals, strengthening democratic processes, and providing humanitarian aid.

UTA, an international organisation operating in Nigeria, recently signed an International Cooperation Agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning. The agreement opens a new vista in cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the organisation.
