The Neuroscience Society of Nigeria (NSN) is set to convene its 23rd Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting from September 7 to 10 at the Candlelux Hotel and Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development.

The conference which is supported by the International Brain Research Organization is centred on the theme “Neuroeducation and Neurotechnology.”

The four-day meeting will focus on how digital innovation and advanced tools are reshaping brain research, education and treatment.

Scientific sessions will explore artificial intelligence in neuroscience education, neuroinformatics, neuroethics amid rapid technological change, translational neuroscience and technology transfer, neurotechnology for mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, and models of neurodegenerative diseases.

Keynote speaker, Professor Mahmoud Bukar Maina, a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow and Maina Lab lead affiliated with Yobe State University’s Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre and the University of Sussex, will present “From Yobe to the Globe: Dementia, Diversity, and the Rise of African Neuroscience.”

The address will highlight the critical need for genetic diversity in global dementia studies and efforts to build stronger African research ecosystems.

Maina’s work uses African-derived induced pluripotent stem cell models to investigate tauopathies such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Additional presentations will feature Professor Barnabas Danborno of Ahmadu Bello University on how the brain learns, develops and adapts; Professor James Olopade of the University of Ibadan on creating effective scientific mentoring environments; Professor Bamidele Victor Owoyele of the University of Ilorin amongst others on niche discovery and research culture for emerging neuroscientists.

“The theme is particularly timely as artificial intelligence, neuroinformatics and other technological advances create new possibilities for how neuroscientists can learn about, protect and treat the human brain,” said NSN President, Professor Angela Danborno.

“As a Society, we are committed to strengthening neuroscience education, research, innovation, mentorship and collaboration across Africa. We are especially proud to provide a platform that amplifies African voices and expertise in global neuroscience.

“I am confident that this conference will inspire meaningful collaborations, strengthen scientific capacity and contribute to solutions that address the unique neurological and mental health challenges of our populations,” she added.

Founded as the umbrella body for Nigerian neuroscientists, neurologists, psychiatrists and students, the Neuroscience Society of Nigeria (NSN) has spent more than three decades promoting research collaboration, public brain-health awareness and policy engagement.

An International Brain Research Organization partner, it supports training workshops and publishes the Nigerian Journal of Neuroscience.

Organisers position the Abuja gathering as a premier platform for academic researchers, policymakers, medical professionals and health journalists working to advance neuroscientific solutions tailored to African needs.
