The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have celebrated Prof. Florence Orabueze, Director of the Institute of Maritime Studies, as she marked her 60th birthday.

The celebration, attended by members of the university community, especially staff of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), as well as family and friends, was held at Sunshine Hotel, Enugu.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UNEC, Prof. Josaphat Onwumere, described Orabueze as an accomplished academic, administrator, and leader whose contributions have significantly impacted the university.

He said, “We are fortunate to have her. At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, we are very grateful to God for giving us an exceptional person like her.

“She has served as Dean, Director, and is currently the Director of the Institute of Maritime Studies. She is also the Chairperson of ASUU, University of Nigeria branch. She is hardworking and has led the union excellently. We are proud of her achievements.”

Onwumere noted that under her leadership, the Institute of Maritime Studies expanded its academic offerings to include several master’s and doctoral programmes.

“Today, the institute runs various master’s and doctoral programmes, a feat yet to be achieved by any other Institute of Maritime Studies in West Africa,” he added.

Prof. Emma Mba, Chairman of Earned Academic Allowance, UNN, and a member of ASUU, also spoke, describing Orabueze as an icon and a distinguished leader whose dedication has united union members.

“We are celebrating a remarkable person. Our chairperson is someone we are all proud to know. We thank God for her life, her leadership, and all she strives for,” Mba said.

He further emphasized that her leadership has strengthened unity within the union and inspired colleagues across the university community.

He called on the government to continue supporting academics and the university system to make the profession more attractive to younger generations.

“People should be proud to become lecturers and professors. In other countries, professors are highly respected.

“The government should support the system so that our work and contributions continue to be appreciated,” he urged.

In her tribute, Prof. Stella Okoye-Ugwu, former Head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, UNN, described Orabueze as a “loyal friend, mentor, and sister” whose friendship has lasted decades.

“I have known Floxie for many years. We were among the few female lecturers in the department when we started. Our friendship has remained strong over the years.

“She is a kind soul, a big sister, and someone who has stood by me through thick and thin. Our friendship will endure as long as we live,” she said.

Her husband, Alex Orabueze, described her as a remarkable woman whose intelligence, kindness, and support have greatly contributed to their 39-year marriage.

“People are right when they speak highly of her. If after 39 years of marriage I have no complaints, then what they say is true.

“If marriage licenses were renewable every 20 years, I would gladly renew ours for another 100 years,” he said amid applause.

He shared that when he sought a wife, he prioritized intelligence, brilliance, beauty, and character — qualities he found in his wife.

Their son, Chukwunedum Orabueze, also praised his mother as a strong advocate of family unity, service, and resilience.

He recalled how she used a broom during family devotions to teach her children the value of togetherness.

He described Orabueze as a fighter who stands up for others and a compassionate giver dedicated to helping the less privileged.

Responding, Prof. Orabueze reaffirmed her commitment to serving God through service to humanity, explaining that true dedication goes beyond prayers and fasting but is reflected in helping others, lifting burdens, and making the world a better place.

She noted that reaching 60 symbolizes a renewed commitment to serving humanity and ensuring that those around her are not left in tears.

She also expressed gratitude for her supportive family, friends, colleagues, and supporters, wishing them continued success, unity, and good health.

The celebrant urged lecturers, professors, and university staff who hinder progress to desist from such actions and support their colleagues’ advancement.
