Turkey urges Putin to make ‘honorable exit’ to end Ukraine conflict

NewsdeskBy NewsdeskMarch 25, 2022No Comments2 Mins Read
BERLIN, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 02: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks to the media following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Chancellery on November 2, 2011 in Berlin, Germany. Earlier in the day the two leaders attended a celebration to mark 50 years of Turkish immigration to Germany. On October 30, 1961 Turkey and what was then West Germany signed an agreement that paved the way for the migration of Turkish "guest workers" to Germany. Germany in the early 1960s, which in many ways was still recovering from the devastation of World War II, required foreign labour to fill its industrial workforce, and the influx of immigrants from Turkey, Italy, Greece and other south European countries made Germany’s "economic miracle" possible. Today large numbers of Germans with Turkish roots are an integral part of German society, though integration and assimilation remain a contentious issue, especially for more recent Turkish immigrants. Russian President Vladimir Putin should be encouraged to make an honorable exit to settle the conflict in Ukraine, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a release on Friday.

“We need to tell Putin now; he should be the architect of a step for peace.

“We should seek to settle this conflict by encouraging an honourable exit,” Erdogan said on his return flight from a Brussels after meeting with NATO leaders.

Erdogan plans talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin to assess details of his NATO meeting.

Ankara sees itself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict and has close relations with Ukraine and Russia.

Erdogan recently invited Putin for talks with Zelensky in Turkey after the country hosted a foreign minister level summit for the first time since the war began.

A compromise between Kiev and Moscow, including Ukraine dropping its aspiration to join NATO and partial disarmament, is still possible, Erdogan said.

The parties, however, remain at odds regarding territorial issues, he added.

As far as Western sanctions on Russia are concerned, he said “nothing can be done” by Turkey to add pressure due to dependence on Russian energy, among other key economic ties.

Russia remains the top supplier of gas for Turkey.

It also sent the highest number of tourists to Turkey in 2022 and is jointly building Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

“I cannot leave my citizens out in the cold.

“I cannot set our industry to zero.

“We must preserve these interests,” Erdogan added.
