OPay Digital Services Limited has issued legal notices to three social media users accused of spreading false claims that the fintech company would suspend its operations indefinitely.
The notices, dated August 31 and September 1, 2026, followed the circulation of a purported “official” notice on social media claiming that OPay would stop processing transactions from September 1 and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
The company identified the three individuals as Adamu B. Garba II (@adamugarba) on X, Viralgrabtvng on TikTok, and Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba) on X.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, signed the legal notices, in which the company described the disputed publications as false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory.
According to the notices, OPay demanded that the affected publications be permanently deleted, followed by clear retractions and unreserved public apologies.
In Garba’s case, the company alleged that his August 30 post not only claimed that OPay was going on a “long indefinite break” but also urged customers to withdraw their money and promoted an alternative wallet, Crowwe Wallet.
OPay issued a similar notice to Viralgrabtvng over a TikTok publication which allegedly repeated the shutdown claim and advised customers to remove their funds.
The company also accused Hafserh of publishing a similar claim on X and demanded that the post be taken down and retracted.
OPay warned that it would pursue all available legal remedies against anyone who continued to create, circulate or amplify what it considers false information about its operations.
The legal action followed OPay’s public denial of the viral shutdown message. The fintech company said it remains fully operational and urged customers to rely on its verified communication channels for information about its services.
OPay has also involved the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force in investigations into the origin and spread of the false shutdown message.
The company said it was monitoring and documenting publications relating to its operations, signalling a tougher stance against misinformation capable of causing panic among its customers and potentially disrupting confidence in digital financial services.
