OPay Digital Services Limited has asked Nigeria’s security agencies to investigate the source and circulation of a viral publication claiming that the fintech company would suspend its operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026.
The company’s move followed the widespread circulation of a purported notice advising customers to withdraw or transfer their funds ahead of the alleged shutdown.
OPay has repeatedly dismissed the publication as false, malicious and misleading, assuring customers that its operations remain normal and that there is no plan to suspend its services.

The fintech company has now escalated the matter, seeking the intervention of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to establish the origin of the false information and identify those responsible for spreading it.
The development comes after OPay issued legal demands to social media users linked to the circulation of the claim. The company demanded that the publications be deleted, retracted and followed by public apologies, warning that failure to comply could lead to legal action.
One of the users involved, identified as Cute Hafserh, subsequently deleted the post and apologised, acknowledging that the information was false and misleading. The user also confirmed that OPay’s operations were normal and that there was no shutdown.
OPay said the false publication had the potential to cause panic among customers, particularly because it encouraged users to urgently withdraw their money.
The company has therefore urged customers and members of the public to disregard unverified messages concerning its operations and obtain information only from its verified communication channels.
The incident has renewed concerns about the spread of misinformation targeting financial institutions and fintech companies, where false claims can trigger panic withdrawals and undermine public confidence.
OPay maintained that its services remain available and that customers, merchants and partners should continue to use the platform normally.
