Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State says his administration maintains a zero-tolerance stance against the possession, trafficking, and consumption of hard drugs.
Aiyedatiwa made the statement on Wednesday in Akure during the public destruction of drug exhibits by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Represented by his Deputy, Olayide Adelami, the governor said his administration had intensified advocacy and awareness campaigns to curb the rising trend of drug abuse among young people.
He warned that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
“This administration is taking proactive steps to tackle the menace through sustained sensitization programs and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. There is no room for hard drugs in our state. Ondo State will not tolerate the activities of individuals or groups involved in illicit drug dealings,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), explained that the destroyed exhibits were from cases successfully adjudicated by the Federal High Court, Akure Division.
Marwa, represented by the NDLEA state Commander, Nanzing Sallah, disclosed that a total of 83.35 tons of assorted illicit drugs were set ablaze during the exercise.
He added that the substances had been intercepted by NDLEA operatives between January 2017 and December 2024.
The commander thanked the state government for its support in the areas of welfare and logistics.
