The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has expressed strong optimism about Nigeria’s future, assuring that the country will overcome its present challenges and regain its path to greatness.
The Sultan stated this in a message delivered on his behalf by the Sarki Fulani of Lagos, Dr Mohammed Abubakar Banbado II, during the presentation of the book “Gani Fawehinmi and the Nigerian Press” authored by Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, daughter of the late legal icon Gani Fawehinmi, in Lagos on Wednesday.
In a statement signed by Bashir Adefaka on behalf of the Sultan’s Media Team, the royal father, who is also President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, extended his goodwill and appreciation for being represented at what he described as a significant national event.
He said the gathering was not only a book launch but also a celebration of Fawehinmi’s enduring legacy as a fearless advocate for justice, accountability, and the rule of law, noting that his contributions remain deeply etched in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The Sultan commended the author for producing a work that captures both the life of the late activist and the vital role of the Nigerian press in promoting justice and democratic ideals. He stressed that a free, responsible, and vibrant media remains indispensable to sustaining democracy.
Calling on leaders, citizens, and especially young Nigerians, he urged them to draw inspiration from Fawehinmi’s legacy by speaking truth without fear, defending the oppressed, and standing firmly for justice at all times.
He further expressed hope that the publication would serve as a lasting source of education and inspiration, strengthening the collective resolve to build a more just and equitable society.
Other prominent figures at the event included Uba Sani, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), former lawmaker Shehu Sani, political economist Pat Utomi, and activist Joe Okei-Odumakin, among others.
The statement concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and sustained progress in Nigeria.
