Singer-turned-politician Bankole Wellington aka Banky W has expressed hope of making it to the House of Representatives after the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, Lagos ordered a supplementary election for the Eti-Osa federal constituency seat.
The tribunal, on Monday, September 11, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a supplementary poll in 32 polling units in the constituency within 90 days.
The tribunal agreed with the petitioners — Banky W of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress (APC) — that the election did not take place in about 40 polling units.
In February, INEC declared Thaddeus Attah, candidate of the Labour Party (LP), as winner of the Eti-Osa federal constituency election.
According to INEC, Attah came first with 24,075 votes, Banky W got 18,666 votes while Obanikoro secured the third spot with 16,901 votes.
Reacting on X on Monday night, Banky W assured his supporters that “it is possible. Still.”
On his part, Obanikoro said via Instagram on Tuesday: “It was all smiles at the tribunal court when it was confirmed that there would be a supplementary election in several polling units under the Eti-osa Federal constituency where the election did not take place.
“I believe that our justice system is on the right track and I praise the judges for this ruling which adheres to the components of the Constitution.”
The LP candidate, however, noted in a post on X on Tuesday that the court did not remove him and that there is “no cause for alarm”.
“I am here to clarify that I was not sacked. The tribunal has simply ordered a rerun,” he wrote.
