The children of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, have reportedly backed a plan to dedicate one-third of his estimated $36.5 billion fortune to charitable causes, potentially creating one of Africa’s biggest philanthropic legacies.

The move could see more than $12 billion of the billionaire’s wealth eventually committed to the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which focuses on improving healthcare, education, nutrition and economic empowerment across Africa.

According to a Bloomberg report cited by BusinessDay, Halima Dangote, an executive director at Dangote Industries and one of the billionaire’s daughters, confirmed that the family supports the plan to devote a significant portion of its wealth to philanthropy.

The proposed commitment is expected to form part of the family’s long-term wealth succession strategy, as his children prepare to take on greater responsibility for the business empire built by their father.

Rather than focusing solely on preserving the family’s wealth, the plan could establish philanthropy as a central part of the Dangote legacy, with the foundation positioned to fund large-scale interventions across the continent.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation has been involved in initiatives targeting malnutrition, healthcare delivery, education and humanitarian relief. With substantially increased funding, the foundation could expand its reach and support more long-term development programmes in Nigeria and other African countries.

Dangote’s wealth has grown significantly in recent years, driven in part by the expansion of his business interests, including the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, as well as Dangote Cement and investments in the agricultural sector.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index reportedly estimates that Dangote’s fortune has risen by more than $6.5 billion this year, placing him among the world’s wealthiest individuals.

The decision by the Dangote heirs reflects a broader shift among some of Africa’s wealthiest families towards structured philanthropy and legacy planning.

If implemented, the proposed commitment would represent a major philanthropic undertaking and could provide the Dangote Foundation with the financial strength to sustain its interventions for decades.

For the Dangote family, the plan would mean that a significant part of the fortune accumulated through one of Africa’s largest business empires could ultimately be redirected towards tackling some of the continent’s most persistent social and economic challenges.
