ASHENEWS reports boat mishap has claimed lives of 10 people in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.
The information officer of the local government council, Abubakar Abdullahi told ASHENEWS that the ttragic incident occurred on the 16th Novemver 2023, at 1:30 pm when a boat filled with passengers from Zangoro Bassa/Kukoki ward going to Gijiwa/Kato ward capsized, leaving residents of community in shock.
According to him, there were 34 people were on the boat, including 20 males and 13 females, among who were four children.
“So far, 24 survivors have been identified, and efforts are ongoing to gather complete information about them.
“40 bags of soya beans and 300 tubers of yam were loaded on the boat.
“Sadly, 10 lives are missing, including Farida Muntari, Sharhabila Sagir, Abubakar Sadiq, Na’ima Ibrahim, Amina, Safaratu Ibrahim, Sadiq Ibrahim, Rafiya Yakubu, and two unidentified victims,” Abdullahi said.
He further said that search for the bodies of the missing persons is ongoing, and “only one body has been recovered.”
“Water hyacinth, strong waves, and a grafting tree are identified as causes of the mishap accident,” Abdullahi further said.
The chairman of the council condole the families of the victims and assured them of support from the council and the state government.
