The Tomatoes Growers and Processors Association of Nigeria (TOPAN) has forecast a steady increase in tomato prices between May and June 2026.
Kaduna State Chairman of TOPAN, Mr. Rabiu Zuntu, disclosed this in an interview with reporters on Friday in Lagos.
Zuntu noted that while tomatoes can be planted year-round in northern Nigeria, seasonal weather variations affect production.
“Although we can plant tomatoes all year, we cannot guarantee quality harvests throughout. Some farmers are harvesting now, others are transplanting, and some are mid-harvest.
“Tomatoes are still available for sale, but prices are gradually rising. By May and June, prices will soar due to scarcity caused by the hot northern weather, which tomatoes cannot withstand,” he said.
He added that tomato prices in the north have already started increasing.
“A 50kg rafia basket now sells for N20,000, compared with N7,000–10,000 earlier this year. A crate sells for N10,000–15,000, up from N5,000–6,500.
“In parts of Kano State, where harvests were abundant, farmers are finishing up, so supply is low. Buyers are turning to Kaduna State and parts of Plateau State, affecting prices based on supply and demand,” Zuntu explained.
Currently, in Lagos, a 50kg basket of tomatoes sells for between N40,000 and N60,000, depending on size and quality.
