Sokoto APC lists Aliyu’s achievements in agriculture, health, environment, others

As the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto marks two years in office, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State has presented a detailed scorecard highlighting sweeping reforms and progress in key sectors, particularly agriculture, health, environment, and social welfare.

The APC state chairman, Isa Sadiq Achida, presented a scorecard to journalists during a press conference held at the All Progressives Congress (APC) party secretariat on Monday.

ASHENEWS reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto on Sunday, claimed that the APC-controlled state government had not recorded any achievement since election to power in 2023.

“Since we left office, governance in Sokoto has become worse. Businesses are being demolished instead of supported, employment opportunities are disappearing, and citizens are suffering under rising costs and insecurity.”

“For two years, there’s been no significant project at the grassroots level. Yet, when allocation was delayed for just one month, they couldn’t pay salaries. That shows the local governments are broke, and funds meant for development have been wasted,” the PDP chairman, Mohammed Goronyo states.

The APC chairman, however, said the achievements recorded by Aliyu-led administration, represent a bold shift from previous administrations, stating that “Governor Aliyu has performed far better in less than two years than his predecessor did in eight.”

Agriculture

In the wake of subsidy removal and rising food insecurity, Governor Aliyu’s administration invested billions of naira into food distribution—providing rice, millet, and maize free of charge to residents, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

To boost production, over 53,000 farmers received farming inputs including fertilizers, seedlings, pesticides, and implements. The government is also procuring 250 tractors and developing 1,600 hectares of irrigation farmland under the World Bank-supported ATASP-1 and SPIN projects, for which the state has paid substantial counterpart funds.

Health

The health sector has witnessed major overhauls. Over 800 nurses and midwives were recruited to fill manpower gaps. Pregnant women and children now receive free healthcare, with general hospitals across the state equipped with ultrasound and X-ray machines.

Essential drugs were supplied to all 23 local government primary healthcare centers, and 270 mattresses and other essentials were distributed to 16 hospitals. Boreholes and solar infrastructure have been installed in healthcare facilities, while nine ambulances were repaired for emergency services.

Environment

In partnership with ACRESAL and the World Bank, the Sokoto State government is rehabilitating the Wurno Irrigation Scheme and reconstructing the Lugu Dam to boost food production and fight desertification. A 40-kilometer shelterbelt was established, alongside 23 solar-powered boreholes for water access and ecological protection.

The government has also launched tree planting campaigns, and youth and women are being trained in waste-to-wealth initiatives. A formal Climate Change Policy Document, developed in collaboration with the UNDP, is set to be signed soon to guide environmental interventions.

Social welfare and others

Governor Aliyu has restored and increased monthly stipends for persons with disabilities from ₦6,500 to ₦10,000. The number of beneficiaries is being expanded from 6,679 to 10,000. Mobility aids such as hand cycles have been distributed across all LGAs, with special vocational training programs underway.

In addition, 100 housing units are being constructed at Illela in partnership with the UNDP to resettle flood-affected IDPs, while the Sokoto Remand Home is undergoing total renovation for youth rehabilitation.
