The Rotary E-Club of One Nigeria, in partnership with the People Planet and Peace Foundation, has planted mangrove trees at Akodo Ise in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
Mr. Seun Agboola, Charter President of the club, said the initiative aims to tackle flooding, high salinity, coastal waves, and storms in the area.
Agboola described the Rotary E-Club as an official online Rotary club that offers the same networking and service opportunities as traditional clubs, but with greater scheduling flexibility.
He noted that Rotary International, a global network of over 46,000 clubs, is strongly committed to environmental protection and sustainability.
According to him, Rotary adopted “Supporting the Environment” as its seventh area of focus in 2020, recognising its importance to human health, peace, and sustainable development.
Agboola listed Rotary’s environmental projects to include mangrove restoration, tree planting, river and beach clean-ups, plastic waste reduction, solar energy initiatives, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education in schools.
“Rotary invests in protecting freshwater ecosystems, watershed restoration, water quality improvement, and sanitation. It also partners with the United Nations Environment Programme on freshwater protection and promotes actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience,” he said.
Miss Olabisi Kumuyi, Secretary of the Climate Beyond Borders Caravan (CBBC), advised residents against indiscriminate tree felling during an awareness session at Upper Primary School, Akodo Ise.
The team also visited LUFASI Nature Park and donated a signpost to Lekki Conservation Centre.
At LUFASI Nature Park, the Founder, Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, urged greater commitment to tackling climate change in Nigeria and Africa.
He emphasised the need for humans to live in harmony with nature, warning that environmental degradation is occurring at an alarming rate.
“Nature is our life-support system, but we are causing serious harm to it. After living in Kenya for seven years, I realised the importance of focusing on what truly matters,” Majekodunmi said.
