The Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has signed an amended Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth $12,347,071.44 with its implementing partner, Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), to procure agricultural machinery aimed at enhancing mechanization and strengthening food security in the state.
The contract covers the supply of tractors, combined harvesters, and other specialized equipment for land preparation, planting, harvesting, and processing activities.
Speaking shortly after the contract signing, KSADP Project Coordinator, Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, stated that the agreement also includes the provision of planters, transplanters, boom sprayers, and solar-powered water pumps, in addition to rice milling equipment, onion storage technologies, and land preparation tools.
According to him, “The amended MoU is designed to support the Kano State Government’s efforts to transition from crude agricultural implements to mechanized farming. This will significantly boost productivity and yields among smallholder farmers, while also minimizing post-harvest losses.”
He emphasized that KSADP—funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF), and the Kano State Government—is leveraging SAA’s expertise to achieve its goals of agricultural revitalization and poverty reduction. These efforts, he said, align with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, the Kano State Development Plan, and the IsDB’s development strategy.
Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, hailed the initiative as a crucial step towards modernizing agriculture and making the sector more appealing to the youth.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Godwin Atser, Country Director of SAA-Nigeria, described the agreement as a “significant milestone in Kano State’s agricultural transformation journey.” He noted that the five-year partnership between SAA and KSADP has recorded notable success.
