The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has showcased four improved TELA maize varieties to farmers in Kano State, highlighting their potential to increase productivity and withstand major production challenges.
The varieties were presented during a Green Field Day held at Sabuwar Unguwa in Karaye Local Government Area of the state. The Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, represented by the Principal Investigator of the TELA Maize Project, Prof. Rabiu Adamu, said the event was organised to demonstrate the performance of the varieties to farmers and other agricultural stakeholders.
Yusuf said the maize varieties had undergone field testing to determine their performance and suitability for farmers. He explained that the improved varieties were developed with traits that enable them to withstand varying climatic conditions while providing protection against major insect pests and diseases, potentially reducing production losses and improving yields.
The initiative received support from maize farmers in the state, with the Chairman of the Maize Farmers Association, Kano State chapter, Ambassador Munkaila Garba, expressing optimism about the benefits of the technology.
A farmer, Saidu Idris Karaye, who provided the demonstration farm, said his experience of about two decades in maize production had shown the importance of adopting improved varieties, urging other farmers to embrace TELA maize to raise productivity.
