ESDAN launches app to boost egg access

The Egg Sellers and Distributors Association of Nigeria (ESDAN) has launched its EggHome App to improve egg affordability, accessibility and freshness.

ESDAN National President, Mrs Olaide Graham, disclosed this in an interview with reporters on Monday in Lagos.

World Egg Day is celebrated annually on the second Friday in October to promote awareness of eggs’ nutritional value, affordability and versatility.

The International Egg Commission established the celebration to highlight the benefits of eggs globally.

The 2026 celebration, themed “Protein That Powers and Protects”, marked the 30th anniversary of World Egg Day.

Graham said the app’s launch and the anniversary celebration highlighted the importance of eggs as an affordable and nutritious source of protein.

She said the initiative also underscored the need to make eggs readily available to households, schools and communities.

According to her, the app is designed to transform egg purchases by providing Nigerians with a convenient digital platform to connect with suppliers.

“Through this initiative, ESDAN seeks to make fresh eggs more affordable and accessible while providing consumers with a convenient way to connect with egg suppliers,” she said.

Graham said EggHome represented a step towards digitising egg marketing and distribution by connecting producers, distributors, sellers and consumers.

She said the platform was also designed to address persistent industry challenges, including unfair pricing practices, exploitation within the distribution chain and recurring egg gluts.

Graham said the app would leverage technology to tackle egg gluts and consumer exploitation.

She noted that egg gluts remained a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s poultry industry, leaving producers struggling to sell their products while unsold eggs lost freshness.

“ESDAN recognises that inefficiencies in marketing, distribution and access to consumers can contribute to this challenge,” she said.

Graham said a more direct, transparent and efficient connection between suppliers and buyers could reduce bottlenecks, improve market access and create better opportunities for egg sellers and producers.

She said EggHome was positioned as a practical step towards reducing exploitation and promoting fairness across the egg value chain.

According to her, the platform aims to improve access to buyers, minimise avoidable losses and enable consumers to obtain fresh eggs at more affordable prices.

Graham said the innovation was particularly important because producers often struggled to sell eggs at sustainable prices, while consumers sought affordable sources of protein.

She said ESDAN hoped the app would help create a more balanced market by improving producers’ access to customers and enabling distributors to operate more efficiently.

Graham said the platform would also offer consumers greater convenience and value for money.

She said the anniversary celebration demonstrated ESDAN’s commitment to nutrition education and awareness.

Graham said students participated in activities promoting the nutritional benefits of eggs, particularly their role in supporting growth, development and healthy living.

“The students’ participation provided an opportunity to encourage healthier food choices and introduce young people to the importance of nutrition, entrepreneurship, innovation and the poultry industry’s contribution to national development,” she said.

She said engaging students at different educational levels reinforced the need for sustained nutrition awareness and greater youth involvement in developing the egg industry.

Graham also said ESDAN reached out to widows, elderly people and less privileged members of society as part of the celebration.

She said the outreach reflected the association’s commitment to improving lives and strengthening communities.

“This humanitarian gesture reflected the association’s belief that the success of an organisation should be measured not only by its business achievements but also by its contribution to society,” she said.

Graham said ESDAN’s support for vulnerable people demonstrated its commitment to compassion, inclusion and community welfare beyond egg marketing and distribution.

She said the outreach reinforced the importance of ensuring that vulnerable members of society benefited from collective progress.
