Prof. John Ajai of Taraba State University Jalingo has advised President Bola Tinubu against extending open grazing as recommended by the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee.
Ajai gave the advice in an open letter to the president and made it available to newsmen on Wednesday in Makurdi.
The university don stated that far from promoting peace, the continuation of open grazing would only deepen divisions between farmers and herders.
According to him, open grazing would further heighten the risk of violent clashes and further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
He pointed out that the consequences of open grazing, such as crop destruction, loss of farmland, and the resulting animosity, were no longer sustainable.
“If this practice is allowed to continue, it will undermine efforts to foster reconciliation and
peaceful coexistence in affected regions.
“As a nation, we must pursue more forward-thinking, sustainable solutions that safeguard the interests of both farmers and herders without perpetuating cycles of conflict.
“Instead of extending open grazing, you should rather champion a more sustainable and forward-looking approach, one that would embrace modern livestock management
practices.
“Modern livestock management practices would ensure the long-term prosperity of both farmers and herders.
“By doing so, your administration will not only address the immediate crisis but also pave the way for a more peaceful, prosperous, and united Nigeria.
“I remain hopeful that under your capable leadership, our nation will find lasting peace and prosperity,” he said.
Ajai commended Tinubu for his exceptional leadership and vision to address one of the most challenging and deeply rooted issues facing the nation, the ongoing conflict between farmers and herders.
The lecturer added that the formation of the committee was a testament to his government’s commitment to resolving the crisis that destabilised local economies and jeopardised the nation’s food security.
He pointed out that the president’s dedication to fostering peace, security, and development was deeply appreciated by all well-meaning Nigerians.

Excellent! Ranching is the best approach to modern animal husbandry, and it is a solution to the long standing conflict between crop farmers and herders. We have gone past the time for open grazing. Let Nigeria focus on promoting peace and unity instead of window dressing.
