Two years after President Ibrahim Traore assumed office as the military leader in Burkina Faso, significant strides have been recorded, particularly in the agricultural sector. Traore’s administration has prioritized the development of agriculture as a means to ensure food security, promote local production, and enhance rural livelihoods.

Agriculture: A commitment to food security and local production

President Traore’s dedication to agriculture has resulted in tangible growth and infrastructure development. Among his notable achievements are:

  • Increased Agricultural Mechanization: Over 400 tractors, 239 tillers, 710 motor pumps, and 714 motorcycles were distributed to farmers, significantly enhancing mechanized farming and productivity.
  • Access to Agricultural Inputs: The government facilitated easier access to improved seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs, contributing to higher yields and ensuring food security.
  • Boost in Crop Production:
    • Tomato Production: Increased from 315,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 360,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
    • Millet Production: Rose from 907,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 1.1 million metric tonnes in 2024.
    • Rice Production: Increased from 280,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 326,000 metric tonnes in 2024.
  • Tomato Processing Plants: The establishment of Burkina Faso’s first-ever tomato processing plants has enhanced local value addition and reduced post-harvest losses.
  • Cotton Industry Development:
    • Constructed the country’s second cotton processing plant to expand processing capacity.
    • Inaugurated the National Support Center for Artisanal Cotton Processing to support local cotton farmers and promote domestic textile production.

Economic reforms and growth

In addition to agricultural improvements, Traore’s leadership has influenced the broader economic landscape:

  • GDP Growth: Burkina Faso’s GDP grew from around $18.8 billion to $22.1 billion.
  • Loan Rejection: Traore declined loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, stating, “Africa doesn’t need the World Bank, IMF, Europe, or America.”
  • Debt Clearance: His administration successfully cleared Burkina Faso’s domestic debts.
  • Salary Reforms: Ministers and parliamentarians saw a 30% salary cut, while civil servants’ salaries were increased by 50%.

Industrial advancements

  • Gold Sector Development: A modern gold mine was launched in 2023 to enhance local processing capacity, reducing reliance on foreign processors.
  • Gold Export Ban: The export of unrefined gold to Europe was halted to retain more economic value within the country.

Cultural and political reforms

  • Judicial Reforms: Traore banned the use of British legal wigs and gowns in local courts, introducing traditional Burkinabé attire as a symbol of cultural pride.
  • French military and media bans: French military operations and media presence were prohibited, aligning with his administration’s commitment to sovereignty and national control.

Infrastructure development

  • Road Construction: The government has embarked on building new roads, expanding existing ones, and converting gravel roads to paved surfaces, improving connectivity and trade.

President Traore’s leadership has demonstrated a clear focus on agricultural growth, economic resilience, and national pride. His policies continue to shape a self-reliant Burkina Faso, aiming for sustainable development and prosperity.
