In a quest to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of climate change, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has launched a tree-planting campaign in Sokoto state.
With over 200 seedlings, the exercise was carried out on Friday at the new housing estate Kalambaina and the NYSC permanent orientation camp Wamakko in Wamakko local government, Sokoto state.
Speaking at the flag-off exercise, the NYSC State Coordinator, Usman Yaro, stated that the tree-planting campaign carried out by the scheme is part of its contribution to providing a sustainable environment free from the increasing effects of climatic change.
He noted that such efforts will no doubt help the state overcome desert encroachment in the future, while also providing a conducive and sustainable ecosystem to the state.
This online platform reports that the Agro-allied and tree-planting NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) group, planted seedlings across the NYSC permanent orientation camp Wamakko and the surface of 500 housing estates at Kalambaina.
The Chairman of Planning, Research and Statistics, at NYSC Sokoto, Mr Joshua Mutua, expressed optimism that the initiative would inspire more local communities to participate in similar environmental conservation efforts, thereby fostering a greener and more resilient Sokoto State for future generations.
The NYSC’s involvement in planting over 200 seedlings at the Kalambaina housing estate complements the governor’s goal of planting 1 million trees, in a bid to restore greenery, reduce desert encroachment, and foster a healthier ecosystem for Sokoto.
