The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood warning for Lagos and several coastal states, urging residents to take precautionary measures as widespread rainfall is expected across southern Nigeria on Tuesday.
According to the agency’s latest weather outlook, persistent rainfall could trigger flash flooding in low-lying and coastal communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along the southern coastline.

NiMet forecast light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in many parts of the southern region throughout the day, with states including Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River identified as areas likely to experience conditions that could lead to flash floods.
The agency also predicted varying weather conditions across the northern and North Central regions. While much of the North is expected to experience sunny intervals with patches of cloud in the morning, isolated thunderstorms are anticipated later in the day over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bauchi and Plateau states. Similar thunderstorm activity is expected in sections of the North Central region during the afternoon and evening.
NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could expose them to danger during periods of heavy rainfall. Motorists were also cautioned against driving through flooded roads, while the public was urged to ensure drains and waterways remain free of obstructions to reduce the risk of flooding.
The weather agency further encouraged emergency management authorities, local governments and relevant stakeholders to intensify preparedness efforts as the rainy season gathers momentum across the country, particularly in vulnerable coastal communities.
