The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in partnership with European Union-backed organisations, has intensified efforts to tackle construction and demolition waste in Lagos through the Green Waste Remediation and Recycling (GROW) Vocational Training Workshop.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos. He was represented by the Authority’s Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi.
Gbadegesin described the initiative as a strategic intervention to bridge technical skill gaps and modernise construction waste management in line with global best practices.
He explained that the GROW project supports the green transformation of the construction sector by promoting sustainable waste practices, strengthening technical capacity, and fostering collaboration among government, training institutions, and industry.
Co-funded by the European Union under the ERASMUS+ programme, the project focuses on Nigeria and Mozambique, addressing rising construction waste challenges. LAWMA is enhancing the management of construction, demolition, and disaster waste to ensure efficient handling and unlock recycling opportunities.
The initiative also aims to develop skills, create jobs, and shift from a linear to a circular waste management system.
Project Coordinator Isabel Goncalves called the workshop timely, highlighting its focus on practical, skills-based solutions. She added that it would strengthen workforce capacity, improve waste management outcomes, and encourage collaboration among industry, academia, and private sector stakeholders.
