Landslide kills 6 people in Illela LGA of Sokoto state

Six people have reportedly died in a landslide that occurred at Kalmalo village of Illela local government area of Sokoto state.

AsheNews gathered that the incident occurred while the victims were excavating sand in a communal effort to build a house for a friend who was planning to get married.

Hamza Illela, who witnessed the incident said that one person escaped unhurt when the site caved in on the deceased persons that included Bashar Dalhatu, Bashar Maciji, Bashar Buhari, Isah Amadu, Abdullahi Salihu and Bilyaminu Jadi.

‘‘It is part of our tradition that whenever one of us wants take his first wife, his friends will gather, excavate soil for him to build his house. We do this to to reduce the burden on him and enhance existing solidarity in the community.

‘‘Unfortunately, while they were excavating the soil, the place collapsed on them; we later recovered their bodies and buried them,” a source said.

The Chairman of Illela local government Council, Abdullahi Haruna-Illela confirmed the incident, adding that he attended the burial rites.
