The Rwandan government has secured a significant $28 million grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to support its ambitious green infrastructure program. This grant is set to strengthen Kigali’s efforts in developing low-emission, climate-resilient infrastructure to address recurring flood issues that have impacted unplanned settlements.
With over 77.3% of Kigali residents living in unplanned settlements vulnerable to extreme weather events, this project comes at a critical time. The new infrastructure will include flood management systems and environmentally sustainable urban developments designed to withstand the impacts of climate change.
The grant will target three main areas: green investments, skills training, and scaling up of climate-smart solutions. By prioritizing green investments, the initiative aims to incorporate energy-efficient and eco-friendly practices into Kigali’s infrastructure. Additionally, the program will offer extensive skills training for local workers, equipping them with expertise in sustainable construction, flood management, and other climate-focused fields. Scaling up climate solutions will help extend these benefits to other parts of Rwanda, contributing to broader national climate adaptation goals.
Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi, Rwanda’s Minister of Local Government, emphasized the importance of the GCF grant in building a sustainable future for the country’s urban centers. “This partnership with the Green Climate Fund is an investment in our people and our environment,” Gatabazi stated, noting that the project would not only improve living conditions but also boost economic resilience by creating jobs and protecting key infrastructure from future climate impacts.
Rwanda’s climate program aligns with its broader Vision 2050 agenda, aiming for a climate-resilient economy through sustainable urban planning, renewable energy integration, and improved environmental protection. By mitigating the risks associated with flooding and other climate-related hazards, the program strives to create safer, healthier living spaces for Kigali’s residents while setting a benchmark for green urban development across Africa.
