The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYOSEMA) has issued a flash flood warning for residents of Ibadan, particularly those living in Akinyele, Egbeda, and Oluyole Local Government Areas.
The alert was contained in a statement released on Friday in Ibadan by the agency’s Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari.
Busari said the flood early warning system and the latest weather forecast indicated that heavy rainfall is expected in these localities within the next 24 hours. She urged residents to take proactive steps to reduce the impact of potential flooding.
According to her, some locations in the affected LGAs could receive more than 100mm (approximately 4 inches) of rain, especially in areas such as the northeastern zone of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), and the Ibadan airport axis.
She emphasized that the alert was issued to prompt relevant local government authorities and communities to take immediate action to prevent loss of life, displacement, and damage to property and infrastructure.
Busari added that the expected downpour in the IITA (Akinyele) and airport (Egbeda) areas could result in road accessibility challenges and hazardous driving conditions.
She advised residents to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters and urged those in flood-prone communities to relocate to higher ground for safety.
“People living in flood-prone areas should move to higher ground to avoid loss of lives and property,” she warned.
