The Edo State Fire Service on Sunday contained a fire outbreak that gutted sections of the popular Anambra Supermarket building along the Benin-Auchi Road in Benin City.
The incident, which occurred around 9 a.m., caused panic among traders, residents, and motorists in the area.
Eyewitnesses attributed the fire to a power surge.
One witness, who preferred anonymity, said the fire started while many residents were preparing for or heading to church services.
The witness reported that thick smoke billowed from the building as flames spread rapidly, attracting a large crowd.
Mrs. Grace Osagie, an eyewitness, said traders and passersby initially attempted to salvage goods and prevent the fire from spreading before emergency responders arrived.
“We suddenly noticed smoke coming from the building, and within minutes, the flames became intense. People were shouting and trying to move items away from nearby shops. It was a frightening experience,” she said.
Another eyewitness, Mr. Emmanuel Omoregie, commended the firefighters for their prompt response, noting that their intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.
“The fire spread quickly, but the firefighters arrived in good time. They worked hard to bring the situation under control and stop it from affecting other shops,” he said.
Mrs. Monica Eboigbe, who was on her way to church when the incident occurred, expressed concern over recurring fire outbreaks linked to electrical faults.
“I was passing through the area when I saw smoke rising from the building. Many people had gathered around. We thank God for the quick response because this is a very busy commercial center,” she said.
Eboigbe also praised officials of the Edo State Fire Service for their efforts in controlling the fire.
Confirming the incident, Mrs. Bidemi Jeremiah, State Commander and Comptroller of the Federal Fire Service, Edo State Command, said firefighters successfully contained the blaze and were taking steps to prevent a resurgence.
Jeremiah stated that no casualties were recorded and that efforts were ongoing to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
