The Sokoto State Government has distributed 20 outboard engines to riverine communities as part of measures to improve waterway safety and prevent future boat mishaps.
Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir announced the intervention during a condolence visit to the families of victims of the recent boat accident at Kojiyo River in Goronyo Local Government Area. Gobir, who represented Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, said the engines would be allocated to six riverine communities—Goronyo, Isa, Sabon Birni, Wamakko, Shagari, and Kware—to strengthen water transportation and reduce risks faced by commuters.
According to him, the state government is deeply saddened by the tragedy and is working on both short- and long-term solutions. While the immediate step is to provide safer and more reliable transport through the new engines, he explained that the government is also committed to completing road and bridge projects across the state to reduce dependence on waterways for daily movement.
In addition to the safety measures, Gobir disclosed that the government had approved a donation of ₦20 million and 100 bags of assorted grains to support families of the victims.
He said: “This government is committed to the welfare of our people, especially those in rural and riverine communities. These measures are to ease their pains and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.”
The deputy governor further assured that the administration would intensify efforts in disaster preparedness and emergency response, working closely with relevant agencies to safeguard lives and property.
