Nigeria’s FX war chest swells to $52.66bn as reserves jump $7.09bn in 2026

Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed to $52.66 billion, marking a $7.09 billion increase since the start of 2026 and reinforcing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) capacity to defend the naira and cushion the economy against external shocks.

Reserve trajectory in 2026
  • Starting point (Jan 2, 2026): $45.57 billion
  • Current level (Aug 19, 2026): $52.66 billion
  • Year-to-date gain: $7.09 billion (+15.6%)

The growth has not been perfectly linear. Reserves briefly contracted by $855 million between April 1 and May 7, dipping to $48.33 billion, before rebounding strongly with a $4.33 billion gain over the next three months. The balance crossed $50 billion in early June, passed $51 billion by mid-June, and broke $52 billion in July, adding roughly $715 million in the three weeks to August 19.

What’s driving the buildup?

Analysts point to a combination of stronger FX inflows and improved market confidence:

  • Higher oil earnings: Dr Jerry Igwilo, CEO of Nisela Capital, said rising crude prices—boosted by geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran–US conflict—have increased Nigeria’s dollar receipts from oil exports.
  • Investment inflows: Dr Muda Yusuf of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) cited stronger portfolio investments and better export performance as key contributors.
  • FX market reforms: The CBN’s ongoing efforts to deepen market liquidity, improve transparency, and stabilize the foreign exchange system have supported the accumulation.
Market context: Naira and policy

The reserve buildup has coincided with improved FX liquidity and a firmer naira. As of August 21, the naira traded around ₦1,346.90/$ at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

On the policy front, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 26.5% during its 306th meeting on July 20–21, 2026, even as external buffers strengthened.

Why it matters

The larger reserve stock enhances Nigeria’s ability to:

Absorb external shocks and smooth FX volatility

Meet international payment obligations more comfortably

Support confidence among investors and import-dependent sectors

For now, the trajectory suggests the CBN has more “firepower” to manage exchange-rate pressures while maintaining its tight monetary stance.
