The Zamfara state government has announced the closure of eight cattle markets in response to the persistent security challenges in the state.
The government said it took the decision to temporarily close several cattle markets (Kara) in five local government areas, as part of measures to address prevailing insecurity
The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Information and Culture, Mannir Mu’azu Haidara, in a statement released on Sunday.
The statement said the affected cattle markets are, Danjibga and Kunchin Kalgo in Tsafe local government, Bagega and Wuya cattle markets in Anka, Dangulbi and Dansadau in Maru, Dauran in Zurmi and Nasarawar Burkullu in Bukkuyim local government area respectively.
According to the commissioner, the decision to temporarily close the cattle markets (Kara) was taken during the State Security Council Meeting held last Thursday, due to nefarious activities of selling and loading of rustled cattle by suspected members of armed bandits.
The statement emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the closure by security agencies and the Directorate of Animal Health and Livestock Development.
The State Security Council also assured the general public and other relevant stakeholders of its commitment to monitor and review the progress, with the aim of restoring peace in the affected cattle market areas.
