As preparations for 2023 general elections gather momentum, politics in Kebbi state is seemingly taking an ominous shape. Candidates for the NASS, State Assembly and the coveted office of governor, have thrown their hats into the ring. It is going to be an interesting political duel. Political observers see the 2023 general elections as likely to be dramatic as well as daunting. Thus, political stalwarts as well as observers are monitoring the situation with trepidations, an expectation devoid of equanimity. The political event that took place at Royal Events Centre in Birnin Kebbi, between Senator Muhammadu Adamu Aliero and Malam…

“I have been confessing several times here that I have benefited a great deal from a newspaper business Muslims set up in Abuja some 34 years ago. As I have been saying here, most of the Editors of the newspaper, “Abuja Newsday” (1988-1993) are Christians.” “My brother, it is becoming increasingly disconcerting and very curiously so that it is safer to be a Christian in Afghanistan and Pakistan than in Nigeria. It is really concerning…How are you and family faring…?” That is an excerpt from one of the many messages that I have been receiving from diplomats, family friends in…
About three days ago, Nigerians received the shocking reports of the massacre of scores of security operatives, including soldiers and police at a mining site in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. According to reports, at least 43 people, including 30 soldiers, seven mobile police personnel and civilians were killed, when armed men stormed the Gold mining site, abducting many people, including several Chinese nationals. The Nigerian Army was quick to confirm the sad story, through a statement issued by it’s Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, who said, “The troops of the Nigerian Army, deployed in…
By Bala Ibrahim Since June 8th this year, when Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, for the 2023 presidential election, the issue of his running mate has remained tough and thorny, with terrible threats to the party’s tenacity. While Tinubu says he is searching for a substantive running mate, after the name of Kabir Masari from Katsina State has been submitted to INEC in ‘place holding’ capacity, the media space is filled with all manner of stories, including the sponsored campaign that a Muslim from South-west can not pick another Muslim…
For over a decade, Nigerians have been contemplating the desirability of self-help against growing violence all over the country. The logic is simple and compelling. Armed insurgents, bandits, militants and separatists have acquired weapons and are attacking, killing and raping members of communities. Persistent calls on security agencies to do the work they have chosen and are paid to do has not yielded results. The irony is that the security agents of the Nigerian State are increasingly being attacked and killed as well. They have failed woefully in performing their constitutional role of protecting citizens. It is in this context…
By Kayode Adebiyi Nigeria recently updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. A statement from the Presidency said President Muhammadu Buhari revealed the update of county’s NDC at a virtual meeting hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden. The NDC is a country-by-country climate change action plan commitment to cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapting to climate impacts within the Paris Agreement. According to the UN Climate Action, each party to the Paris Agreement is required to establish an NDC and update it every five years. Furthermore, at the 2021 UN Climate…
By Victor Buoro Globally acknowledged as a high-profit but low-risk criminal activity, human trafficking has unfortunately gained attention as the modern-day form of slavery that is expanding in scale with damaging repercussions on humanity and nations’ economic lives. And going by the definition that; “Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit”, it is currently ranked among the fastest growing criminal activities across the globe, comparable to the smuggling of firearms that is considered the second most organized criminal network worldwide. In recent…
By Bello Aminu Dangata “The sanity of a good politician is known through comments made by others against or in his favour” I finally arrived at the decision to briefly respond to the above-captioned article published in Politics Today (https://politicstoday.ng/sokoto-2023-how-the-moles-judases-in-apc-are-exposing-themselves/) on Saturday, June 25 2022. I am making this response ONLY because Yusuf Suleiman, who is the major target of Aminu Mohammed’s or his master’s attack, does not ordinarily join in dirty politics of lies, deceit or name-calling in order to gain cheap popularity. It is also to make some clarifications on certain claims about which Mohammed does not know,…
After some months of not publishing the readers’ comments because of a series of events happening in Nigeria in a quick session, I must share some of the comments today. Still, due to space limitations, only very few can appear. However, all comments are essential, and readers can access such comments on my FB (mkothman@yahoo.co.uk), Twitter (@mkothman1), Blog (www.deepthoughtwithmkothman.blogspot.com), and Instagram (profmkothman) Handles. Happy reading School System in Nigeria: Education without Character? Prof, this is a well-written piece. Unfortunately, Education is now in a sorry state. A state where no well-to-do individual hoping to send his/her child to public schools.…
In March, the Global Alliance for the Future of Food published an analysis of the national climate plans for 14 countries, including Bangladesh, China, Senegal, the United States, and the United Kingdom. We were looking to see how well the potential for transformation of food systems to help drive down emissions had been taken into account. Overall, we found that countries were not doing enough to systematically recognize and capitalize on the significant potential gains from changing the way we grow, transport, and consume food. This seems counterintuitive, given that agriculture and food production account for around a third of…
