By Usman Mohammed Binji I At press centers across Nigeria, a quiet hum of activity masks a harsher reality. Look beyond the chatter, and you find retired and veteran journalists—some pacing the corridors aimlessly, others sitting in silence, their weary eyes reflecting years of service and sacrifice. These are the men and women who once chased breaking news, exposed corruption, and held leaders accountable. Today, many can barely meet their basic needs. A retired editor wanders from office to office, phone in hand, calling former colleagues still in service, hoping for financial assistance. A former reporter sits on a worn-out…

Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) has threatened tough legal action against truck operators using its logo without authorization, warning that such acts have continued to embarrass and damage the company’s reputation. A professor of Nematology at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Monioluwa Omolara Olaniyi, has shed light on a hidden world beneath the soil. She explained how tiny plant-parasitic nematodes silently attack crop roots, weaken plants, and make them vulnerable to diseases. Olaniyi, who lectures in the Department of Biological Sciences, made this known on Thursday during NOUN’s 36th inaugural lecture in Abuja. Her lecture was titled: “Managing Plant Worm Adversaries: Safeguarding the Environment, Sustaining Our Daily Bread.” She described nematodes as serious enemies of farmers. These worms reduce crop yields, stunt plant growth, and lower farmers’ incomes, especially…
Last week, Nigeria lost a remarkable progressive reformer, the former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase. He embodied what a Nigerian police officer should be—a visionary leader who dedicated his life to advancing the long-overdue reforms of the Nigeria Police Force. He pioneered the adoption of intelligence-led policing, a strategy designed to uphold the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence. Through this, he sought to humanise policing in Nigeria. After his tenure as IGP, Arase continued to apply his…
