The Portuguese government has officially nominated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a candidate for a second term in office. UN spokesman, Mr Stephane Dujarric, disclosed this at his daily news briefing in New York on Wednesday. He said the nomination came in a letter addressed to the Presidents of the General Assembly and the Security Council. Two Policemen were on Thursday shot dead in separate incidents by yet to be identified gunmen in Anambra The shootings occurred just a day after the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Monday Kuryas, warned criminal elements to repent or relocate from the state. Mr Samuel Ani, another Community leader in the crisis ridden Oruku Community in Nkanu local government of Enugu, was on Wednesday, shot dead in the area by unidentified gunmen. The Police Command in the state confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr Daniel Ndukwe in Enugu on Wednesday. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has recorded 11 deaths and 655 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 153,842. The NCDC disclosed this on its official Twitter handle on Wednesday. The centre also reported 11 COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the total fatality in the country to 1,885. Till date, the NCDC said 130,818 patients were discharged after being treated. The NCDC stated that the new infections were registered across 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Activities on the Nigerian stock market sustained the upward trend on Wednesday with a gain of 0.14 per cent on bargain hunting in Oando and 21 others. The Lagos State Government has announced that there would be total closure of the third mainland bridge from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday. The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde who made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday, said   the bridge would be closed for 24 hours. The Police Command in Abia has killed four suspects and arrested eight others over the attack on the Abayi Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday in Abia.
