The Tomatoes Growers and Processors Association of Nigeria (TOPAN) says the price of tomatoes went up because of high demand during the Sallah celebration and a drop in how much farmers are producing.
Mr. Rabiu Zuntu, the chairman of TOPAN in Kaduna State, shared this information during an interview on Wednesday in Lagos.
Zuntu said that tomato prices should go down in the next couple of weeks.
He explained that the price increase is mostly due to more people buying tomatoes for celebrations, while farmers are not producing enough.
Zuntu added that both the Sallah and Easter celebrations caused a high demand for tomatoes, which pushed prices up even more during this period.
He said that now that the celebrations are over, tomato prices should return to normal in about a week or two.
