The Nigerian President, and chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Bola Tinubu, has addpted less aggression against the military junta in Niger Republic, saying diplomacy “is the best way forward” to end the leadership crisis in that country, AFP has reported.
Nigeria, and ECOWAS had earlier issued threat of a military invation, should the Niger coup leaders fail to reinstate deposed president, Mohamed Bazoum.
They issued a seven-day ultimatum to the coup leaders which ended on Sunday, August 6, and before which Nigeria had cut electricity supply to Niger Republic.
Daring the bloc, General Abdourahamane Tchiani severed diplomatic relations with Nigeria, Togo, the United States of America, and France.
However, in spite of his renewed quest for diplomacy, Tinubu on Tuesday, ordered for new financial sanctions against the country through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Reuters reports.
The president’s spokesperson said the sanctions will target “entities and individuals involved in the coup.”
