ASHENEWS reports that in commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has highlighted the importance of gender equality and empowerment in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
APWEN emphasizes the need to create an inclusive environment that supports women and girls in science.
The APWEN President, Engineer Adebisi Osim stated this while commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in Calabar.
According to her, this annual observance held on February 11th aims to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Speaking on the 2024 theme, “A New Era of Sustainability” with the sub-theme “Think Science,” Osim said that by investing in the success of women and girls in science, potentials would be unlocked to drive innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in Nigeria.
“On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, APWEN calls upon all stakeholders to join hands in creating an enabling environment that promotes and encourages women and girls to pursue careers in science.
“Together, let us celebrate the achievements and work of women and girls in science towards gender equality and scientific advancement for a better society and commit to a future that values their diverse contributions, where gender equality is the norm, and scientific thinking thrives for the betterment of our society”, she said.
The APWEN President stated that the association has implemented initiatives including mentoring programs, scholarships, skill development workshops, and networking to empower women and girls in STEM adding that these initiatives aim to guide and inspire the next generation of female scientists and engineers.
Speaking on the pressing issue of gender-based violence, including rape, Osim stated that these vices continue to hinder the aspirations of women and girls in science.
“APWEN urges immediate action to create safe spaces, implement legal frameworks, and provide support systems to eradicate gender-based violence.
“Parents, educators, and mentors are called upon to foster an environment that encourages girls’ interest in science. By challenging stereotypes and providing equal opportunities, girls can contribute to sustainable development, innovation, and leadership.”
