The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Kebbi, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, has advised practicing journalists on the need to adhere to the ethics of journalism practice in the country.
Ahmed gave the advice when he received delegation of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by the Vice President (North- West Zone), Alhaji Muhammad Tukur, on a visit to Birnin Kebbi on Friday.
“As journalists, you should adhere to the ethics of the profession and ensure high standards.
“Speak truth to power and hold those responsible for steering the wheel of power to account,” he said.
Ahmed highlighted that with proper mechanisms and leadership, Kebbi could contribute significantly to national food security due to its abundant arable land, rivers, and manpower.
“In Kebbi, we have the resources to feed the country. However, effective utilization and leadership are crucial.
“When leaders neglect these opportunities and succumb to corruption, poverty and lack of basic necessities persist,” he said.
Ahmed encouraged journalists to explore the untapped agricultural opportunities in the state by touring its regions.
He emphasized the role of the media in guiding the state towards development.
“I appreciate your visit and our doors are always open for journalists. Together, we can contribute to the progress of our state and the country at large,” the commissioner said.
Earlier, Tukur informed the commissioner that the visit was part of the NUJ’s Zonal meeting with stakeholders.
“The meeting gathered NUJ state council chairmen and secretaries from the North-West, along with national officers from the union and Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Tukur explained that the meeting aimed at addressing issues affecting the zone and exploring necessary measures for resolution.
