The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate in Niger state, Umar Bago has said that it is time for everyone in the country to embrace equity.
In a press statement to mark the International Women’s Day on Wednesday, Bago said that women have been a huge part of the nation’s democracy and societal development and should no longer be relegated to the background.
The Governorship Candidate called on the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other elected leaders to embrace equity and ensure that the 35 percent affirmative action or more is achieved adding that it would ensure a balanced society.
“I join women all over the world to celebrate the 2023 International Women’s Day with the theme “Embracing Equity”. The theme of this year’s IWD celebration is apt especially in a country like ours where a transition is about to occur.
“Going by the efforts the women put into the electioneering process and their commitment in withstanding harsh weather conditions to stand in the queues to vote goes a long way to explain how much of agents of change they are.
“Women are a valuable asset to any society and are also the most vulnerable as they suffer different forms of discriminations and are first and worst hit by different crises and insecurity. Women experience different forms of bias at the workplace, in schools and in the homes which negatively impacts their potentials,” he stated.
Bago stated that it is time for more women to be given political positions and opportunities to enable them make decisions as it affects them and the children saying that his administration would ensure that women are given equal opportunities.
“My administration will be women-friendly, we will give equal opportunities to both gender and provide a fair playing ground for women to thrive and showcase their potentials. I celebrate all women for their strength, resilience and doggedness at how far they have helped in molding the nation despite the challenges they face. It is time for them to be rewarded,”
