Revenue: Bursars of Nigerian varsities to understudy Ghana system

The Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities (ABNU) says it has sent some of its members to understudy Ghana’s universities revenue generation formula.

The National Chairman of the association, Dr Victor Imagbe, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of its ongoing Annual Conference and Award, on Monday in Abuja.

Imagbe, who is also the Bursar, University of Benin, said the move was part of efforts of the association to upscale funding for Nigerian tertiary institutions in the face of dwindling statutory allocations.

He said that apart from seeking for how to improve the revenue generation of the schools, the association had started aggressive orientation for its members on how to access intervention funds in TETFUND.

He said that bursars being managers of the universities system, had also deployed their skills into ensuring industrial harmony and peaceful environment by interfacing regularly with all the unions.

According to him, the awards his association gave to both the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris and the Executive Secretary, TETFUND, Prof Suleiman Bogoro, were aimed at honouring them and served as a motivation for others.

“We have sent delegation to Ghana to understudy the revenue generation in their universities system.

“We need to collaborate to ensure that we have world class universities. We have also been collaborating with universities outside the country.

“The conference will give all the bursars to understand how to access funds available at TETFUND and the reports they are supposed to be monitoring and proper management of the intervention of the funds that TETFUND is managing.

“Bursars have always been having meetings to address some of the issues within the university system.

“Apart from funding, which is a major challenge in the system, we want to look at how you can generate funds, attract investment and intervention funding to universities.”

Imagbe said the association would continue to ensure a peaceful environment.

“That is why we always have meetings with all the unions in schools to give them adequate information, so that they will not hold government to ransom.”
